As employment law solicitors, we are often asked by employers what can be done to reduce the chances that discipline of an employee becomes necessary?
Discipline of employees is a reality of business. Don’t avoid the reality, take action right from the start.
- When you hire a new employee – make sure they sign a suitably drafted written contract which spells out the obligations they have to your business.
- Have clear policies about what is and is not permitted. If issues arise that are not addressed in a policy – amend the policy. Do not make policies a term of the employment contract.
- Apply the same rules to everyone. Put the rules in the policy and follow the policy.
- Identify problems early on and raise these with the employee immediately. Leave no doubt about your expectations.
- Document everything.
