Managing employees to reduce disciplinary problems

April 12, 2018 By Morgan Couzens Legal

As employment law solicitors, we are often asked by employers what can be done to reduce the chances that discipline of an employee becomes necessary?

Discipline of employees is a reality of business. Don’t avoid the reality, take action right from the start.

  1. When you hire a new employee – make sure they sign a suitably drafted written contract which spells out the obligations they have to your business.
  2. Have clear policies about what is and is not permitted. If issues arise that are not addressed in a policy – amend the policy. Do not make policies a term of the employment contract.
  3. Apply the same rules to everyone. Put the rules in the policy and follow the policy.
  4. Identify problems early on and raise these with the employee immediately. Leave no doubt about your expectations.
  5. Document everything.

Please give us a call on (03) 5722 4681 if you would like to talk through the needs of your business.
